Farm Notes for Week Eight, 3/16/11

Week 8 – Notes from the Farm March, 16th

In honor of the people of Japan, today we planted cherry trees in the orchard.

Before we went out to plant Wendi shared with us the words symbolic of strength

and spirit in Japan, Sho Chiku Bai.

Sho, the word for pine and a symbol of strength/inner strength,

Chiku, the word for bamboo and symbol for flexibility and longevity,

Bai, the word for plum and symbol of beauty and optimism in time of adversity

Pine and bamboo stay green in harsh winter conditions in Asia.

Plum trees blossom while winter snow is still on the ground indicating the end of winter and showing renewal, that spring is on the way.

Sho Chiku Bai is held in highest regard by the Japanese people as the symbol of resistance to hardship. We could have this in our minds today while planting trees and seeding, thinking of the people of Japan.

We planted cherry trees and a pineapple quince tree. (For details on tree planting see Week 2 Notes from the Farm on the blog). We seeded lettuce, chard and onion.
