You won’t make much money is small farming and those who do will have a unique product.

David Retzky from County Line farms does make money./

Factors needed: Money, personality, commitment of the family and direct marketing skills.

Mentioned was Substituation Agriculture, the vertical integration of food by big ag interests that does the growing and controls all steps all the way to the consumer.

Eat at Bills, a film about the Monterey Market. How they needed to move away from this model in order to survive selling food.

Wendy mentioned Added Value, NYC products out of Brooklyn.

Grow for the right reasons, try to do what’s good for growing food.

David carp, the Fruit Dective has an article on selling fruit. The Big box ag interests are moving to generic labels on fruit, such as “Yellow” peach. No mention of a variety even though there would be 3-5 different peaches throughout the seasons that are called yellow.

Mention was made about Epithet for a Peach (the SunCrest Peach) that explains the death of this great variety. By Mas Masamoto

The cherry fruit fly, Spotted Wing Fruit Fly attacks stone fruit, cane fruit and cherries. Destroyed by bottles of vinegar.

Olive Fruit fly also controlled by vinegar. Start trapping in June and July.
