Captured Student of Week Seven: Astrid Lindo
On Midnight of February 22, 2011 Astrid and her fiancé’ Matthew launched the Living Seed Company. Their vision for the company is to “Support happy healthy people preserving genetic diversity in our food through the distribution and growing of open pollinated food seed and educating about the life affirming art of seed saving.” The idea for this company was born when Matthew was deep in meditation, while he and Astrid were on a summer camping trip to Mount Shasta.
Astrid Lindo was born in Colombia and when she was two years old her family moved to Florida. After working as a freelance artist in San Francisco, she moved to Santa Monica, California, where she launched her ecological interior design studio, working16 hours a day. In April of 2009 she took a trip to visit a friend, at the Solstice Grove Institute in Nicasio, which forever changed the course of her life. Solstice Grove Institute is a 32-acre ranch that is privately owned, it is ‘off the grid’, and was created with the intention of living sustainably and in harmony with nature. Astrid’s weeklong visit was a transformative experience that ignited in her strong feelings about her out of balance life. Upon her return to Santa Monica she sold everything in a months time and returned to Nicasio to live at the Grove in a yurt. Astrid met Matthew at the Grove and over time their relationship blossomed.
The Living Seed Company offers 22 varieties of seeds that can be propagated all over the country and are quite rare. The primary source of seeds, for their first year of business, is from such companies as Baker Creek, and Peaceful Valley. Astrid and Matthew are currently experimenting with approximately 4000 seeds that were directly seeded in the ground, which include carrots, kale, beets, spinach, cilantro, radishes, peas and lettuce. Additionally, their yurt is filled with 100 tiny tomato plants, all for the purpose of seed saving and selling during their second year of business. They are also in the process of designing their own seed packages.
On May 1st - 6th, they are hosting a seed school taught by seedsman and Executive Director of Native Seeds/ S.E.A.R.C.HBill McDormen, for the purpose of teaching people about seed propagation, cultivation, and starting a seed business.
