This Time of Year...

Winter in Novato is quite mild. Still, many of our crops wear signs of the season's chill. Drooping foliage browns and hangs tired, ready to be cut back and turned to compost. Young citrus trees are blanketed in insulating fabric, bee hives are secured from cold gusts and the hoop houses maintain warmth for delicate herbs through the season. Not every plant needs coddling during these dark days of the year. Hearty brassicas thrive all winter here in Indian Valley. This time of year we are oh so grateful for our crop of broccoli, turnips, cauliflower, brussel sprouts, and kale of all varieties that continue to flourish tirelessly in the cold with as much vigor as our cherry tomatoes did in the heat of summer.
